Statement on Labour Leadership Election Results

Scientists for Labour congratulate Keir Starmer and Angela Rayner on their new positions as leader and deputy leader of the Labour Party. These are difficult times for us all, but we are confident that they will be able to take our movement forward, and hold the government to account over its actions in this crisis. It is vital, in this time of medical and scientific emergency, that scientific and expert advice are at the heart of Labour’s decision-making processes. For this reason, we re-iterate our call for them to re-establish a Cabinet-Level Shadow Minister for Science; to ensure that we as an opposition play our part in tackling COVID-19 as effectively as possible.
